I have a 1980 datsun 720 with an L20B and an automatic trans. I bought another L20Bfrom a 79 620 it has a tag on it that has two different codes.

(  )DEL X2461
(N)O. 891555 (9)

( )= unidentifiable

I haven't taken mine out yet to know what tags it has but according to my haynes manual the code should say 3N71B.

If they were both L20B engines should the transmission still work? Should I swap the whole combo instead? The problem with that option is that the engine has a spun bearing.

Set them side by side, if the tilt is off, swap bell housings, its really that simple.

ALSO,   don't trouble yourself with the codes, there really isn't anything stamped on them in any particular place that means much.  They arent hard to change so get up one morning and get to work.  Remember to replace clutch, input shaft seal, and fork while your in there.

It took a while to get motivated on this again but i got the tranny swapped and i am going through and fixing some other stuff that was broken in the process. The plan is to get her to a pretty big mini truck show next month in Missouri. We'll see how that goes.

Braden620...thanks for the info however being an automatic I didnt have to change the clutch and fork but I did do the front and rear seals before it went back in.

I'll post back here after I get to drive it. Hopefully everything works...(fingers crossed)
