    Posted: 01 Feb 2013 at 10:51am
Hi guys,

Does anyone know what MANUAL transmission options can be used on the Z24 in the 720? I've read somewhere quite a while ago that the 280z manual will work but not sure about that. I'm hoping for a closer shift pattern and better performance ratios. Mine's a 5 speed now.

Thanks!

the 280z tranny wont directly bolt up IIRC.  Basically nissan made the fs5w71c and the fs5w71B   they are all basically the same with minor ratio changes and bellhousings to fit L series 4 or 6 z22,  z24 and ka series.

I was wondering if the roughly 2002-2004 Frontier transmission would work. It looks very similar but I would need to take some measurements. It's a much closer shift pattern that would help in speed shifting of course.

u can swap in any Lseries trans into your 720 if u swap bellhousings, search online for a how-to conversion. i have seen a 620 4speed swapped into a 720 to gain lower/closer gearing for the 1/4 mile. the datsun trans with the closest shift gate that i've had is the U20 5spd trans out of a '69 datsun roadster, great for SCCA. the '83 280 ZX close ratio short throw 5spd currently in my 620 doesn't come close to the U20 but still way better than a truck 5spd

the frontier tranny is probably a fs5w71c.  You would need to swap bellhousings and speedo pickups.  The tilt may be off but you could easily measure this.

Thanks Smooth. That's some good info. So basically I would just have to use my original bellhousing and clutch setup?

Well, assuming you're running a 6BT engine... you should only run the GM NV4500!!! lol, tim keith should get that!

I've always wanted to grab up a bunch of RWD transmissions and check out the bellhousings and draw them up in autocad. It would be easy compared to the L16 manifold that took forever for some reason.. damn tolerances of that manifold were stupid big!

Would make for some cake work on an adapter, depending on the input shaft may or may not need modifications.

smoothy is correct!

the 280 transmission can be used on your Z24 but the shifter will sit at an angle to fix this you use the bell housing off the current Z24 5 speed on the 280 transmission. the 83 280 5 speed has a good gear ratio with a tall 5th gear that is great for fuel mileage on the highway

Still on the never ending quest to squeeze more from an L series
