Have spoken for this 1972 Datsun 1200.....$100 cash

Bought this set of 4 rims for it for $100

I had spotted these rear rims at a salvage yard months ago and forgot about them until I saw them on Kijiji for sale, luckily my eyes were deceiving me and they were not the same ones!  Picked these babies up for $100

I will be building a LZ24 Engine for it using a head from my OLD L16 from my 521 engine

And thats about it so far

Just like you said!  Go to the salvage yard and look for one on a Z car, or old muscle car!!  I bet it would be closer than you think!

Sweet wheels and subscribed!

5 inches is about a +25mm offset if you measured from the back of the wheel!  Are you going to do tire stretching or beefy tires?

Will you have to roll the fenders?

I measured from the face of the bolting surface to the outer bead using a straight edge, sorry should have said 5 inches of dish.   Might have to stretch, I dunno, have found four tires for $240  all 215/50r13's but I am gonna see if they will take $200 cash.  I think I will have to roll the fenders for sure or cut them and get flares, or make them

These are the carbs I have planned for the LZ24, they are MIKUNI VM's from mid 80's Yamaha YZ250's.  Choke is 38mm and venturi is 55mm.  I think these 2 will be more than enough.

It seems the Datsun God wants me to really really build this 1200 OLD skool.

I had found these tires online in the city north of me 100 miles.  Well called the shop, they have 4 BF Goodrich 215/50R13's in stock that some one had ordered and decided not to buy.  They had all four advertised for $200 plus tax and environmental fees for a total price of $245...................well I managed to deal them down to $200 cash for all 4!!!  So I will go up friday and pick them up.  And hopefully I will have the 1200 home by sunday!

I know, its gonna be tearing me up especially  when I have the new rubber and rims all ready for it, guess I have to get lug nuts too.  Will have the 215/50r13's on the rear and 175/70/13's on the front
front tires will be 1 inch larger in diameter, so they will look ok IMO.  Or if I can find 165/7013's I will put those on the front.

The quest for the 1200 ends tomorrow, she will be at my buddies shop shortly after dinner!  And I will have my fatty tires too, just gotta track down some "mag lug nuts"  when I am in the city so I can throw the mags on right away!

Now.....question........guy said he quit driving it because he got another car and it was rusting on the bottom side..............it was not twisting or anything so I don't think its too bad.........and he is not mechanically inclined........so it might not be too rusty at all.    Is this a common thing on the 1200?  I mean if I have to make subframe connectors, that wont be too hard.

honestly it would not surprise me if I woke up tomorrow morning with duct tape across my mouth, I can guarantee my wife is sick of hearing about it, as with my friends, and I am waiting for my 2 year old daughter to say Datsun.............I say it more than I occasionally curse in front of her, and she picked up sh*t in no time lol

And on the 8th day.......God said, "Let there be Datsun's!"

I went to the city today, got my tires and lug nuts.  Picked up the 1200 and brought her home and started on her right away!

Gotta love 13" fatties!

Now she is a bit rusty on the exterior..........but I can live with that for a while.  People who put carpet from houses in cars should be slapped upside the head.................look what happened to the floor..................and as for the subframes..............ya gonna need to make new ones LOL Shocked  Because they are pretty much non existant.

I got her started too!  Put new gas in the tank, primed her and she started up........had to prime it a few times before it would stay running.  But what a little champ!  Needs the clutch bled something fierce too as it is nonfunctional.

She sat a little low so I fabbed up some shackles and lifter her bum 2.5 inches.

I should have parked it on the level ground as you can't see the nice rake too well from this angle.

But ya, she is finally home and that is the main thing.  And I need some lower profile tires on the front I think.

Upon looking in the owners manual I found receipts from 1993 for the following items.

Full gasket set $17.50
Ring set with moly top ring $24.75

The parts were bought in Great Falls Montana.  So I think that is where this car originally came from.  It looks as though it made the journey to the great white north(Canada) in 1994.

The engine was overhauled On October 19th of 1993 @ 49,427(probably really 149,427)
But irregardless this engine only has 14,614 miles on an overhaul.

In the owners manual it says "Rings, valves done, bearings checked"

And I can tell it had the same owner from 1974 to 1993! Same handwriting on the oil change writings in the manual!!!!

Isn't that neat?!!?!?!?!?

Oh and could not contain myself, took more pics lolApprove

The dash pad is absolutely mint and I am diggin the groovy door panels! lol

Original RADIO!!!!!

I did not have a proper tire for a mag to go on this side but you can see what the rake is like not with the shackles as this side is on sitting in a hole.

Fender flares?  Got rubber? Got Dish? LOLLOL  I really dunno what to do here, kind of want to leave it.

Looks like a cool project, Love the stock radio and owners manual. I don't know how a 1200 subframe runs but if you can box tubing to conect front to rear it will stiffen her up. I have done this on a few rusty camaros. Boxing it with channel can work to.

Posted By: 289Fatsun
Date Posted: 17 Apr 2010 at 5:10pm
ya I am basically going to make a front half out of 2x2 square tubing and replace all of the rotten floor, the trans hump is still in good shape, but the inner fender needs the lower 6 inches or more replace on both sides.

2" x 2" is a good  choice it might even make it handle better then stock. It will stiff the car. If she is realy bad you can also put a plate on the inside and bolt or weld to the 2" x 2". On my camaro the cage is welded to 1/4 steel plate one on the inside and one under the car.

Posted By: 289Fatsun
Date Posted: 17 Apr 2010 at 6:29pm
Yes I think I will plate the floor to the 2x2 as I think the rest of the so called "good floor" may not be up to the task of being welded to.  But if I have a front subframe that ties into the rear, she will be nice and stiff as you say.  I would like to make this car a jack of all trades, autocross, drift and dragracer eventually.

Ok  I have engine options now for the 1200.

Keep the rebuilt 1200 in it
Turbo the 1200

Stock rebuilt L16 (free from a friend, he is into Z's has a 240 and a 260 and his dad used to have a 510, wrecked it with no insurance and pulled the engine that had just been rebuilt top to bottom)

Stock Z24
LZ24 combo
Eaton M90 equipped Z24

I am leaning towards

TURBO 1200
Stock L16
and
SUPER Z24

The stock motor tricked out is probaly the cheaper choice as you already own this motor. P.S. does Canada have smog and does she have to be smogged?

Posted By: 289Fatsun
Date Posted: 18 Apr 2010 at 5:57pm
Nope she does not need to be smogged!  How much horsepower could a guy get out of the 1200? Naturally aspirated that is?  I think I may just throw the stock Z24 in it for now with a different carb.

Progres report, pulled the engine and the floor caret...............AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH lol nasty

fatsun, i would drop in a v8 if that's what the car is planned for. u already mentioned a subframe and floor work, u might as well drop in a sbc. over here they're very common and sell for cheap including the transmission. and they're reliable, u can pound the asphalt at the racetrack then drive it home afterwardsSmile

lol LMAOTongue  Thats why I would never put a 350 in anything, its the most unoriginal engine ever used for hotrodding, NO OFFENSE to those that have done a 350.  If I put anything in it other than a 4 banger it will be a V6 ...............too much work involved

I understand that, My 1925 Hudson has a aluminum block Dodge 225 slant six between the frame rails because nobody use's that motor. I hate that the Hudson is on hold since my green 620 got hit parked in front of my house.  But sbc are cheap that's why I  said chevy.

lol I know, I would do another small block ford, but the reason I am starting on this project is I don't want to swap a diff, or modify the existing firewall.  So I think a hot old school 4 banger carbed is the way I am going to go
