Well maybe its time to get another vehicle so that the 620 can get the mechanical attention she deserves.   My neighbor has for sale a 91 240sx le (less common model) its a dual cam KA, 5 speed, all the bells and whistles.  The engine is currently NON OP  supposedly has a blow head gasket but there is no water in the oil or vice versa. Engine is clean.  195,000 on the clock.  Hopefully I can pick it up pretty cheap.   Im calling it WTF  because I don't know WTF I am doing buying a car that doesn't currently drive. I see her potential.   Pretty clean all around the car.   I guess I could name it WTF because I want to fix it.  I hate to see it sit.   I looked up the car on KBB and NADA and was surprised to see the original MSRP at just under $18,000   thats not a cheap car back in 91.

were is the seats?? i would say buy it if it has seats and had a good price the KA24DE is a great engine if properly serviced

the cars looks straight the interior looks ok would look better with seats

how is the wireing? i notice some wires poking out at the drivers kick panel and the fuse panel poped offt

i have never seen a nissan fuel gauge work without a battery or without the switch being on

KA24DE=more power than SR20DEShocked
KA24DET=more power than SR20DETOuch

Knotty the owner took the leather seats out and put them in his 240sx,  the tweed seats from his 240sx are in his shed.   The leather seats were ripped a little but his tweed are pretty nice.   The tweed seats will come with this car.   Im not sure about the fuel gauge.

Actually I am doing an s14 sr20det swap into his 240sx so the KA24DE out of his car is going into the blue devil.   His car has a stainless header and an intake so I will use those parts on my 240.

Well, I bought the car.  Now I have to remove the engine for a rebuild.  I also have to remove the ka24de out of another s13 to swap into the blue devil.  Then I have to install an s14 sr20det into the 240 donor.  YIKES Thats 3 engine removals, one complete rebuild and 2 complete swaps!  SHEESH!

WTF!!!!!     Ok today was a very busy day.   I got the engine 95% removed.  Just waiting to get the cherry picker in there and plop it out.  Tranny is out, and everything else is out.  Its not too bad removing a KA,   but not as easy as an L20B.   The power steering and AC lines were new to me.  I normally dont work on things that have either.   I need lots of parts!

Braden have you thought about doing an LS swap on the 240 ?

ABSOLUTELY NOT.     While I could do a swap of some sort I dont need a project like that.   This is basically a virgin 240.  Most everything I took off had never been off before.  I need a car that I can daily drive and get decent fuel mileage.   I already have a go fast project (620).   This car is going back with the factory ka24de.  I already have a stainless header, and an intake tube.  I MIGHT put a set of cams in it, and a new exhaust is in order.

Got the ngine out and on the stand.  I started stripping off all of the egr garbage.  There were a bunch of vacuum leaks, I'm sure that this engine ran liek total crap before it overheated.  If the PO had only done some preventative maintenance every once in awhile this car would still be running. The knock sensor is melted off the side of the block, if that tells you how hot it got.

Block, head, crank, and rods are at the machine shop.  Im having a hard time deciding on whether or not to replace the pistons.  I just spent a LOT of $$$$  ordering parts today and I have only ordered half of what I need.

you should be ok without getting your blocked bored without a torque plate the L,Z and K blocks are already stressed and should you should be fine and in spec with the out of round, my machinest can do this small job for you with ease and get it done correctly and you will never have issues

good luck in finding a torque plate for a L,Z or K series there is probable less than 5 in the united states

Here's an update long overdue.   Brought the car back from my brothers garage to the garage at the new house.  I got everything back from the machine shop and it all turned out OK.  They assembled the head for me and Its not clean enough for me so I am going to take it all back apart and scrub every last speck of dirt from it.    I have decided to order a set of new rods rather than try to order and replace the small end bushings on my stock rods.  Im going to get started  with the engine next week.  This week I managed to clean the garage up and clean the car before I pulled it in.  The engine bay was pretty nasty but its all good now.   I bought some POR15 and Im gonna paint it on my battery tray.  Thing should be moving alot faster now that I actually have the car in where I can work on it.  I opted to get a mishimoto radiator over the used one I got from my neighbor.  Need to order the aluminum shroud and fans.    Im going to be building my own custom exhaust on this car and Im thinking of going with a magnaflow muffler.  My neighbor paid 500$ for his exhaust and after I buy a 100$ muffler I should have less than 150$ in my own custom design.  Thats about it for now. Stay tuned.

Got the new struts and lowering springs installed, I have been working on the rust in the rear hatch. I got the rust cut out, and patch panels welded in. This was my first attempt at any type of body work and I learned a lot. Even trying to control the heat from the welding the metal warped and I had to use a hammer to dimple the metal back into shape. There will be a little more filler than I wanted on the hatch but at least there wont be rust holes and 10 coats of paint. Hopefully I can get started on the filler and sanding today and get it back on the car this weekend. I'm felling like working on the block today, I'm hoping to try to get the casting flash de burred so I can get the block ready for assembly. Pics to come.

Long needed update.   There was rust in my hatch where the rear spoiler was mounted.  Someone had patched it with mesh and bondo.  I got a little carried away chipping out the bondo and ended up stripping it down to bare metal, cutting out the rust, welding it back up,  ever-glassing over the patches, glazing, priming and painting. I had never done body work before and I think it turned out pretty good.  It would have been alot better if I could have controlled the warp-age better.  I tried to let the metal cool but It still warped as I welded.  If I could have controlled the warping better there wouldn't have been hardly any filler in it all. Been working the last two days on assembling the engine.  For me its a tedious process because I am so picky, if its not perfect it makes me crazy. I would ramble on with what all I did on the bottom end but I will let the pictures do the talking.   Note the de-burred engine block.

Time for an update.   I almost have this thing together.  Engine should be in by next weekend. I still need to figure out what to do for an intake and I need to order stuff to build my exhaust.   I would have had the engine together by now had it not been for the idler sprocket bolt hole stripping out. Seems to be a common problem on these engines.  I was extremely careful with it too and it still stripped.  Oh well,  I ordered a time sert insert for it and should have it in early next week.

Cant have a clean new engine without a clean tranny.  New seals, gaskets, clutch fork, rubber boots, etc.

Stripped the idler sprocket bolt at only 10 ft lbs of torque. 5 days later and a $90 Time sert kit I was finally able to button the engine up.  The time sert is a very handy tool and its very easy to use. You basically drill out the old threads, drill oversize, cut seat, tap, and install the insert. I installed mine with some red loc-tite just for added insurance. The insert took the required 60 ft lbs easily and I think it could handle plenty more. Here are some pics.

Nice progress man! What's the cost of the build on this engine so far? I like threaded inserts, a LOT! I've used a mcmaster and reid supply for locking threaded inserts in some heavy duty manufacturing environments and had great success! Thinking about doing a jack screw in the timing cover mod? Keep up the great work!

Thanks EZ.  Engine cost so far shew I dunno well over 3500$ Probably closer to $4,000. The time sert worked great and I would recommend installing it even if your idler hole isnt stripped. What jack screw mod are you referring to?

Engine is in and running.  I have put about 40 miles on it so far.  Break in period is 1,000 miles and I am keeping it under 4,000 rpms.  Still waiting on my electric fans and I still need to build a custom intake and exhaust.  As soon as I get it tagged she is headed to the dealer for new seat belts.

Daily driver.   For the 620, I mean the Turd,  to get the attention she deserves and for me to be able to do the things I want to do to her I need another set of wheels. The engine in the 240 should last 20 years or better and I think that is plenty of time for me to get my truck done.  I want to take the 620 COMPLETELY apart.  Frame off, completely stripped.   I'm tired of the kingpins and the disc brake swap.   Im going ball joints with coil overs.  Complete rebuild on the sr20.  Adding the pathfinder lsd.  All new paint and wiring.  All new interior.  All new rubber seals bumpers etc.   I just cant do all these things in one day so the 240 is gonna get the miles while the 620 rests.  Im tired of seeing my truck rust. lol

Well Fellas I sold the 240.  I loved her dearly and she treated me well for the short time I got to spend with her.  Hopefully the new owner will sign up and post updates.  My son is growing big and my wifes car is also a coupe thus we needed the money to get something bigger.  Don't worry though, about 12 hours after I sold the car I had an Epiphany and realized that my truck needs some well deserved attention.

What are your HP goals?    As long as that stock head can flow enough, then the limitations of the engine are governed by the rod bolts.  They will suffice to the 500hp mark assuming your engine management is doing its part.  I built it for boost.  The rings were gapped for boost.  I would say 300-350 for many many miles would be very possible for around $5000  (rough estimate).  I can tell you that if you are serious about this than you had better be serious throughout the whole project.  Any junk parts from ebay and or universal crap will destroy your project. There is a reason that crap is cheap. I suggest you pick up Maximum Boost by corky bell.  Read it, re read it.  Talk to Garrett honeywell (tech line), and start saving and planning.  This wont be a weekend project, and there will be bugs. You will need access to a dynamometer and someone much more knowledgable than I  on engine management.  I know a good guy in Pennsylvania but you will need to be able to trailer the car there for some dyno runs.  Do a local search on tuning shops and research their credentials. Out for now.

I'm balls deep in. I will start by collecting parts. I understand the extent of the project and will not cut corners. Hp goals are reliable 300 give or take. you had mentioned that a disco potato would be too small so can you guys suggest some Garrett turbo models to aim for? Thanks for replys I'll try to get corkys book!

Hey guys i bought bells book! Braden what kind of camshafts were you going to throw into this thing?

Posted By: Braden620

Eric,  read the section on camshafts, Corky will guide you.  You might find a ka24det group and see what others have done.  I personally would buy Tomei, they have recently done a lot of development on the dual cam KA.  For a snail I would look @ a GT3076R, there are several turbine housing available with different response curves.   The gt3076 will put you into the 350-400 HP range. Better get an LSD!!!!

Sorry about going dark. Almost sold the 240 but then i came to my senses . The ka popped. Learned alot about the motor since I got her. In process of ripping her out. Aquired sr turbo and injectors. Chipping ecu via daughterboard. Have manifold ,downpipe, piping and intercooler aswell. I'll know what went on the motor soon. Rear end was welded, front and rear sways added. Replaced tension rods. Found a set of z32 rears have not installed yet. Have 5 lug hubs and poopy rims to move it with for now. Ac delete. Clutch line relocation and black box o doom delete. Have a seat and rails need to work out some kinks with that. Also have lm7 v8 (iron block alum heads) motor now I've been dicking with. I'll try to get some pics for you. Braden if you see this please send phone #.

Eric, this is terrible news. I was extremely methodical, particular and anal when it came to building that engine. Everything was built to FSM specs using the highest quality parts available. When I started and even when I finished that project I never had intentions of selling it. That engine never missed a beat during the 3500 or so miles I drove it. The ONLY hiccup I ever had was with the IACV, I disassembled it to clean out the carbon and I never could get it to idle as low as it should have been. I guess the factory puts red epoxy over the adjustments for a reason.

Anyways, this makes me sick because I wish I had never sold it. I have tried to find another 240 that was as clean as that one and I haven't been able to find one half as nice. Please don't hack up a pristine example of a stockish 240. If the stock head and valves could provide enough flow that engine could have produced 500hp, the bottom end limited by the hardware on the eagle rods.

Very interested to see and hear what is going on. Please post high quality pictures when you can. I called and left you a message and sent you a PM.
