My dad owns a 69 Datsun 521. Everything I can find online says a 69 should be a 1600cc but it even has 1300cc badges. About 20 years ago he parked it out behind his house in the dirt and the weeds. At the time it couldn't pass CA smog inspection. Now though CA moved the year of smog to 1975. This being a 69 is smog exempt now. I've been eyeing this truck for years and have now decided I want to get it running again. It ran when he parked it so I'm hoping some simple wiring and fixing up the fuel system I can get her to fire up. I'm on my phone posting this and I'm trying to get a picture up. I know for sure I'll need a windshield also.

Welcome! A 69 should have the j15 as far as I know. Post pictures!   It's possible that you have 520 fenders??

There's nothing like getting a truck that's been sitting and getting her back on the road!

Unfortunately windshields are freaking expensive! Pilkington would be your best bet though for a new glass.

On a side note I would be interested in starting a group buy for them if it would drive prices down..

Get busy on your truck and take lots of pictures!

I have personally seen 3 Datsun L engines fire up after sitting 16-19 years. It's possible for that 1300 to fire up if it isn't frozen. Squirt engine oil in the cylinders then crank it over, see if it spins.
Better to learn from other peoples mistakes than to make them yourself.-Anonymous

The 1969 Datsun 521 had two different engines, the early J13 and the late L16, either one will start with a little fresh gas as long as everything is functioning properly, I started a J13 that likely sat 15 years and it ran great, the fact is that it idled so slowly I thought the starter was stuck turning over, but after a several seconds I put my had on the exhaust manifold and felt it was getting warm, that is when I realized it was actually running and not just turning over.
I did turn it by hand before attempting to start it.
I know the voices are not real, but they have some really good ideas.

when did California change the smog rules? I need a copy of it so I can take it to the mvd here in phoenix so I won't have to run my 521/620 thru emissions. I have extra 520/521/620 parts if needed
