So recently I acquired  a 1978 Datsun 280z 2+2. I bought it off a little old wealthy lady who had bought it straight from the dealer ship. It was a California car and was later brought up to Victoria, B.C. where it spent the last years of its life. She decided she wanted to sell it and called up my boss who owns an auto customs and restoration business in the area and asked her if he wanted it, and luckily a couple days before I had told him my mad love for Datsuns so he jumped on it once he heard. She said it was a rusty mess, needed engine work, trans work and some upholstery. So the next night my boss and I went to a local under ground parking lot where the car was kept. To our surprise it was near rust free, (Rear quarter panel, small patch on the floor and what I later found inside the rocker panels.
I noticed a lot of little things about it like no rust under the battery tray, original Z key, original jack and stock interior and decided I was happy with it, and bought it. For 500$.

We took it back to the shop and we found out it just had worn u-joints and the ball joints were shot. No engine problems, no trans problems. It had an awful paint job on it before it was brought up to Canada so I will be fixing that but otherwise it was a mint car.

Now a few things I will mention is I am 17 and dont have a lot of money to put into it so its not going to be an original Z show car. Its going to be a daily driver. Now I have to due a bit of work on it to pass a safety inspection since its been imported so thats all priority.

I started working on  it today (forgot my camera but will update as I go along with pictures) and I stripped off the stupid rubber and with hopes to shave the car of all the hideous parts and started attacking the rust.
My game plan is to replace Ball Joints, U-Joints, Rear Brakes, Bushings, Tie Rods and while waiting for parts I can do body work (dont have to pay for much of it since its shop supplies) and tackle the rust. I would like to get that all done so that I can get it insured and on the streets then start really working on it.
I have been getting more and more into upholstery and plan on making all new floor mats, carpets and seat covers since they are old, faded and look awful. Im going for a black interior and have a set of black racing seats I will toss in later. And as soon as it passes inspection im tossing fender mirrors on

If anyone has any good sources of aftermarket 280z parts, information on rebuilds, etc I would love to know of them!

Right now I will just attach a crappy cell phone picture of the car to give you an idea, then follow of with more detailed pictures in a couple days.

Cheers

Thanks Knottyhead!

I have done a bit of work on it since Ive got it and would like to get it ready for a Vehicle Inspection by the New Year! Like I said, priority is pass the VI so I can insure it and drive it. I dont have a lot of money right now and thats really the only thing slowly down the project (but im sure most of you can relate)

I ordered new U-Joints, Ball-Joints and Tie Rods that I plan on putting on it this week as well as new Drums and Shoes but before I put those on I would like to find some wheel cylinders for a reasonable price, anyone know of good places?

I tore up the carpet on the passengers side and had a look to see what rust is there and its not bad but it needs to be worked on. The interior of the car is pretty solid besides not being stylish. Just needs a couple floor patches and new carpet and its fine. Engine and Trans are still running strong.

I cut out a lot of the exterior rust and grinded it down. I also shaved the body of all the trim, it was hiding a lot of rust along the rocker panels that was forming from the inside out so I cut out all the rockers and inner rockers and welded up some of the holes from the trim as well as cut out the trailer hitch and started taking the wiring out and now I just have to make some templates for panel pieces and weld them back on and spray some primer.
